Modeling Private Investment Criminal Activities
Konstantin Konstantinovich Borzunov
Dmitry Nikolayevich Filippov
An unprecedented wave of private investment fraud schemes has swept over Russia, affected Eastern Europe, and brought Albania to the edge of a civil war, highlighting the need to take a closer look at the notorious “financial pyramids”.
The object component method, developed and applied to analyze financial companies’ fraud activities, makes it possible to conduct imitation modeling to explore a wide range of socio-psychological aspects of criminal financial organizations’ efforts to attract depositors.
It was presumed that potential depositors find themselves under psychological pressure generated by advertising and some other factors of information-psychological influence. The decision to contribute funds is modeled with due regard for the terms offered by a specific company and a whole set of parameters reflecting individuals’ personal traits, such as trustfulness and attitude to money.
The model has made it possible to identify the principal mechanisms and typical phases in the development of financial pyramid fraud schemes. The algorithms developed forecast the intensity of deposit inflow depending on the intensity of information-psychological influence, which, in turn, depends on advertising and “start-up” costs.
